SUP frost usually means the weather’s calmer. And calmer conditions means high pressure which often brings no wind, glassy waters and chilly air temperatures. But without too much windchill, the sun blaring and days getting longer those sunrise paddles are go!
Beating those January blues with SUP.
We’re now well past the halfway point of winter. And mornings are getting lighter earlier. We appreciate for some it still mightn’t be enough (yet). But give it a few more weeks. If you can get afloat before your day starts then now’s the time. Jack Frost may be nipping but with appropriate SUP clothing this time of year that can bring some amazing flat water stand up paddle boarding conditions.
Sunrise SUP (in Jan).
For the truly committed a spot of frosty sunrise SUP in January is food for the soul. The light, the sounds (or lack of) and your surroundings can make the experience almost ethereal. And if you’re a dab hand with cameras you’ll no doubt snap some cracking shots.
There’s nothing quite paddling on sunny winter mornings. And with the current run of UK weather (of which you can find out more here) it’s perfect to get acquainted with some SUP frost action. Kicking off you day the best way will see you right for the next few hours until bed. We talk about the mental health and well being positives of SUP a lot at McConks. But it really does work.
Frosty wild swimming.
You could choose to take things further and actually get in the drink – as family McConks often do. Staying on board is one thing but winter wild swimming is another healthy activity that can see you set up right for the day ahead. Combining both SUP and open water swimming is an obvious one. Just make sure you have your safety procedures in place before dipping. Particularly your warming up process.
Frosty wild swimming in tandem with sunrise SUP is one initiative to get January done and dusted. And then it’s only a few weeks until the clocks change. And that signals spring! With the arrival of spring comes a new season of SUP proper.
Here’s to January SUP frost, sunrise and early morning paddles with a spot of wild swimming chucked in for good measure.
