Who should buy a two piece adjustable SUP paddle?

The benefit: Two piece paddles are a good compromise for paddlers who want the benefit of a higher performance shaft with more consistent flex.

But who want to be able to change the paddle length for different width boards, or different paddle environments?

Things to consider

The downside: Slightly heavier than one piece/rigid SUP paddles – two piece paddles do not fit into your inflatable SUP bag – the shortest they shrink to is around 170cm.

Short enough to fit into most cars, but not necessarily without making it a little awkward inside!

Choose your blade

85sq inch teardrop

A small/medium teardrop blade. A good all-round paddle shape for smaller paddlers or riders wanting a surf blade.  Available in 100% 3k prepreg carbon or bamboo veneer finish.  Bamboo = ~30g heavier.

Low aspect, subtle linear dihedral, 10 degree, rigid equivalent weight* 510gm.

93sq inch teardrop

A larger teardrop blade. A good all-round paddle shape for larger paddlers or riders wanting a medium/slow cadence blade for touring. Available in 100% 3k prepreg carbon or bamboo veneer finish.  Bamboo = ~30g heavier.

Medium aspect, subtle linear dihedral, 10 degree, rigid equivalent weight* 540gm.

Worth noting

*This is the weight of the rigid, one piece paddle +/- 10%. McConks 3 piece paddles are 190gm heavier than the rigid equivalent weight, and the two piece adjustable is 100gm heavier.

Also available as three piece travel variations.

SUP paddles and paddling define what stand up paddle boarding is. Yet the amount of new recruits that miss this is significant. It’s not hard to understand why. The 2 piece adjustable carbon shaft paddle would certainly do the job well.

Of all stand up paddling’s component parts it’s boards which are biggest and so stand out most. Even after carefully perusing all potential gear conversations invariably to chats about board performance.

Not so shiny

Cheap alloy shafts that feature flex properties so soft it’s a wonder you’ll propel yourself anywhere are mostly useless to the point of being obsolete.

Some manufacturers and SUP emporiums do offer upgrades (take this option if you can).

But for the most part, there’re still too many cheap paddles being wrapped in shiny bundles labeled as freebies.

5 reviews for 2 piece adjustable carbon shaft paddle with teardrop blade

  1. James clinton

Excellent service, superb paddle, exactly as described, cut to size, nice light paddle, excellent value for money! Local company, would highly recommend, 10/10!

  2. Andy Carter (verified owner)

Nice paddle, very light with just enough flex. Used it for both short and long paddles on open and inland water, the light weight makes it less fatiguing for longer trips. I’d buy one again at this price if I lost this one!

  3. James Buckle (verified owner)

Really happy with my paddle, very light and stiff and exactly the sort of performance that I expected after reading the various blade style choice literature provided. A quick chat by email was super helpful to let me hit the buy button, and they were helpful and quick. Delivered quickly and well protected – very happy.
In use, the paddle is strong and has survived a few cases of me falling/overbalancing on rocks without chipping or scratching easily.

  4. Duncan Jack (verified owner)

Got a bamboo one and a full carbon one. I like the blade shape but not terribly impressed with the adjustment mechanism. Get the tension just right, not so tight that you strain the clip but not so slack that the handle moves in the shaft and it’s always too loose the next time you come to use it. So have had to remember to include a spare Allen key with my SUP kit.

  5. Anonymous (verified owner)

So far so good. The paddle works as it should and the bag is nice to have. I was surprised there was no bubble-wrap or similar, it just arrived in its bag… good for the environment I suppose, but potential for damage by courier.

    Thanks Michael
We take full responsibility of any damage caused by couriers, and this is better for the environment. However, if it results in products damaged beyond repair, that is obviously bad for the environment. We’re currently monitoring the trial, and will revert to recyclable, recycled packaging if it turns out that products do get damaged
    Best wishes

Q & A

What benefits/downsides are there to a bamboo veneer blade over 100% carbon? Sam asked on July 30, 2023

Hi Sam
Thanks for your message. The bamboo blade is ~30g heavier, and slightly less resilient. If you chip it, water ingress can make the bamboo veneer swell and cause further damage. Edge protection resolves this risk, as with any carbon type paddle
Hope that helps
Andy
