A note of paddle boarding equipment for the coming year.
At the time of writing, we’re in the depths of winter 2024/25. Christmas has just gone and we’re waiting to ring in the next 12 months. For many, stand up paddle boarding has been shelved until spring (although we’d suggest winter paddling can be some of the most fun you’ll have). No less, it’s time to consider your kit.

Hayling Island West Beach sand bar – accessible waves for all!
The south coast UK has traditionally been one of those SUP places with a large contingent of stand up paddle boarders. In years past Paddle boards have proven to be great vehicles for making use of the Channel Coast’s fickle waves. And so it continues.
Hayling Island in Hampshire boasts a great spot for those fancying a dabble with accessible waves. The West Beach launch gives way to an offshore sand bar that can see fun and rolling waves perfect for those fancying some SUP surfing action (see video above). The birthplace of windsurfing, Hayling’s sandbar can also be great in summer when the surf abates.
The Great Glen (Caledonian Canal) – the most iconic of adventure SUP routes.
Here at McConks we’re massive advocates of adventure SUP. Whether a multi-day overnight excursion or a shorter, mellower sojourn we love a bit of backwater discovery.

Perhaps the most iconic adventure SUP places in the UK is the Caledonian Canal. Otherwise known as the Great Glen paddle. Formerly the site of a gruelling race it can be undertaken at your leisure. And is definitely one for the bucket list in 2025. Check out more about this spot by clicking the image link above.
Head of the Dart.- the classic yearly paddle board race.
Each year the Head of the Dart SUP challenge is hosted in South Devon. Attracting paddlers from all abilities and walks offline it’s not so much a race (for most) and is more of a social gathering of like-minded riders.
With a course set along the Dart, the route can test yet equally provide a fun and accessible way into SUP racing. As adventure SUP paddling goes this is one of those SUP places that can have a dual purpose if you enter the race.
Saunton Sands – a staple North Devon surf spot.
Another SW location, Saunton Sands has long been the staple of wave heads looking for long peeling surf that isn’t too full on. Of course, all SUP places have their hardcore days. But Saunton can be very welcoming – both in terms of conditions and the crowd you find in the water.
Of course, Saunton isn’t the only surfing break in the area. There are plenty more to choose from depending on your ability and wants/needs.
Llangollen Aqueduct – you’ll need a real head for heights.
Llangollen Aqueduct carries canal water over the River Dee valley in North Wales. As SUP places go this is one of the most breathtaking. If you don’t have a head for heights then avoid!
Completed in 1805 the Llangollen Aqueduct is the longest and highest aqueduct in the UK. It’s a stunning wave to enjoy the local area. And all the better aboard a SUP!
Cotswold Water Park – the home of McConks SUP.
No SUP places 2025 bucket list would be complete without us mentioning our backyard. The Cotswold Water Park is an area of 42 square miles with 180 lakes. Lake 86 Cotswold Water Park Hire and Lake 32 Outdoor Activity Centre are where you’ll find the majority of paddle boarding antics as not every lake sees SUP allowed.
As far as conditions these stretches of water are pretty sheltered with easygoing paddle boarding conditions on offer. They’re perfect for beginners but also any rider looking to get afloat and blow the cobwebs away.
