We’re all addicts to some degree – a handful more than others granted. But where you channel this addiction and the energy it consumes is what separates the few from the many. At its heart addiction is an escape mechanism; a way to rid yourself of the day’s stress and trials that frequently occur. For some it’s opening that bottle of wine, kicking back and slurping greedily. For others, it’s the absolute must of catching up with the latest reality TV episode of the moment. As humans addictive personalities are normal and everywhere you look. The trick is learning to channel this the best way.
Unfortunately, many of us are lazy, or to put it another way, prefer the easy life. This isn’t a criticism as we totally get why. After a hard day at work, running around ticking off all your responsibilities and chores it’s understandable why anyone would want to chill out. But often missed is active hobbies like stand up paddle boarding are proven to help unwind, decompress and destress. Also unlike beverage quaffing they’re inherently better for your well-being. Again, don’t get us wrong here. We’re not suggesting gym bunny style sessions aboard your SUP. Simply dabbling with a paddle in a mellow and relaxed way is enough. Offsetting your daily grind with an active route to channel nervous energy will not only keep you healthy of body but also of mind and spirit. Stand up paddle boarding really can help achieve this. It also makes that post-SUP beer all the tastier.
Perhaps addiction isn’t the correct term. Maybe we should use the phrase ‘creatures of habit’. There’s no denying, however, that getting ‘out there’, in the wild, is the best type of habit. For some, it’s tackling Neptune’s wrath (surfing) while for others it’s ascending to the gods via a precarious mountain pathway (climbing). But it doesn’t have to be extreme. Stand up paddle boarding can be both of these things. It’s the mellower side of SUP that pricks most people’s interests though. But that side’s enough to immerse yourself in and be used as a wellness tool. Not every day either. A few times a week will suffice. If you can get out daily though then hats off!
